Location: Whalebone, North Carolina at the Oregon Inlet Receiver: Ford Radio ('66 Mustang), whip antenna Date : 9/4/68 between 1130-1300 hrs EDT One of the best QTHs for daytime (groundwave) DX is North Carolina's Outer Banks. The geography of the Eastern Seaboard has two distinct concave coastlines which converge at Cape Hatteras. This allows "local- like" reception of stations from Boston to Jacksonville, Florida! AM radio signals easily span the coast due to the extremely high conductivity of salt water. The ground conductivity at my home QTH in central Maryland is rated at "2"; sea water is estimated at "5000". More time and more sophisticated equipment would surely lend to a most interesting bandscan. 540 WDMV Pocomoke City, Maryland 560 WGAI Elizabeth City, North Carolina 590 WGTM Wilson, North Carolina 600 WCAO Baltimore, Maryland 680 WCBM Baltimore, Maryland WPTF Raleigh, North Carolina 690 WNNT Warsaw, Virginia WAPE Jacksonville, Florida 710 WOR New York City 740 WMBL Morehead City, North Carolina WBCI Williamsburg, Virginia 750 WBMD Baltimore, Maryland 770 WABC New York City 790 WTAR Norfolk, Virginia 800 WTMR Camden, New Jersey 810 WYRE Annapolis, Maryland 850 WRAP Norfolk, Virginia 860 WAYE Baltimore, Maryland 880 WCBS New York City 920 WPTX Lexington Park, Maryland 930 WITN Washington, North Carolina 960 WBOC Salisbury, Maryland 980 WRC Washington, DC 990 WIBG Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1010 WSID Baltimore, Maryland 1030 WBZ Boston, Massachusetts 1050 WCMS Norfolk, Virginia 1080 WWDR Murfreesboro, North Carolina 1090 WBAL Baltimore, Maryland 1100 WHLI Hempstead, New York 1130 WNEW New York City 1140 WRVA Richmond, Virginia 1150 WGBR Goldsboro, North Carolina and (? probably WDEL Wilmington, Delaware) 1190 WANN Annapolis, Maryland 1210 WCAU Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1230 WCMC Wildwood, New Jersey WNOR Norfolk, Virginia (WCMC the stronger signal) 1260 WWDC Washington, DC 1270 WTID Newport News, Virginia 1300 WFBR Baltimore, Maryland 1310 WGH Newport News, Virginia 1330 WESR Tasley, Virginia 1340 WMID Atlantic City, New Jersey (first heard 50 miles inland) 1350 WCVU Portsmouth, Virginia 1360 WEBB Baltimore, Maryland 1430 WNAV Annapolis, Maryland 1450 WFPG Atlantic City, New Jersey 1460 WLPM Suffolk, Virginia (now on 1450) 1480 WLEE Richmond, Virginia (no longer on) WDAS Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1500 WTOP Washington, DC 1520 WSLT Ocean City, New Jersey (now on 1020 WIBG) 1540 WRGM Richmond, Virginia 1550 WVAB Virginia Beach, Virginia 1580 WPGC Morningside, Maryland WPAC Patchogue, New York (now WLIM) 1590 WETT Ocean City, Maryland 1600 WCPK Chesapeake, Virginia Call letter changes have not been shown. Stations which have changed frequencies are shown. The reception of Baltimore/Washington area stations can be attributed to the salinity of the Chesapeake Bay. Likewise, Philadelphia/Camden are undoubtedly aided by Delaware Bay. Three known stations have subsequently begun operation in the area on 1060, 1530 & 1580. They would obviously have an effect on this bandscan as far as same and adjacent frequencies are concerned.
