MWDX Notes from Vacation Trip to S. Lee, MA - APR 1993 Mark Connelly - WA1ION In mid-April of 1993, my wife, my son, and I took a one- week "spring break" in the Berkshire Hills at the Oak 'N' Spruce Resort in South Lee, MA. The location, in the southwestern corner of the state, is near the New York and Connecticut borders. Most of the time was spent in sightseeing, swimming in the indoor pool, etc. After a winter that featured 7-day, 70+ hour, third-shift work weeks and worse-than-average weather, the need to unwind was great. Although DX was relatively low on the priority list, I did manage to "sneak" some in. Equipment used was a Realistic DX440 portable receiver and the homebrew RTL-2 remotely-tuned loop used in conjunction with the MWT-3 Regenerative Tuner / Controller. A few daytime loggings were made in the parking lot on the car radio; essentially, these were on channels that suffered from excessive TV-set interference when reception was attempted in or immediately-outside the buildings of the resort complex. On trips where DX is just a "side activity", the first goal is to do daytime-groundwave and stable late-evening skip bandscans. This initial characterization of band activity at a given site builds the foundation for DXing of a more serious, target-hunting nature on subsequent trips. Sharing such bandscans with other DXers can save them much time in cranking- up their own efforts when they visit nearby locales. Some listening was done at local sunset and sunrise, but conditions during that period tended to be chaotic with rapid changes in dominance on non-clear channels. Developing a useful guide to reception during these transitional periods would have required much more time than I was willing to invest on this short, family-oriented trip. General observations ==================== As my home QTH in metro-Boston is not tremendously distant (only about 110 miles) from S. Lee, meaningful comparisons of reception patterns could be made. The S. Lee location is well inland and rather mountainous; the home QTH is within 15 miles of the ocean and terrain thereabouts is considerably flatter. The S. Lee location, as expected, showed reduced reception capability of both distant groundwave and low-angle long-haul skip as contrasted with typical coastal sites, or for that matter, with inland sites that are flat and have open, high-conductivity agricultural-quality soil. CBF - 690 in Montreal, at approximately 225 miles, was the farthest groundwave noted in S. Lee with strength approaching "entertainment quality" (e. g. receivable on average consumer- grade radios). For comparison, Halifax, NS and Norfolk, VA area groundwave receptions - both at about 500 miles - are easy from Cape Cod beaches. From Newfoundland, WHDH - 850 in Boston was received well at about 900 miles during the daytime. High-angle short skip strengths are much less location-dependent. Carriers of some of the big Chicago clears were audible days on the loop / DX440 combo.; previous trips to the area actually produced good audio on these because wire antennas longer than 100 ft. were used. These signals are definitely groundwave. Even at Boston area sites these are audible: I could get them every day at the "Beverage farms" I had near Willis Pond in Sudbury, MA (1975-1976) and at Menotomy Rocks Park - Arlington, MA (1960-1974). Night time results indicated a strong bias towards short skip. This is partially due to the season: mid-April to early August is characteristically short skip dominated. Horizon blockage was also a factor. Domestic DX was the main activity; foreign DX was noted mostly on the high end of the band where skip angle for a given distance is higher. Stations from North America, Europe, Asia (Saudi Arabia-1521), and Africa (Algeria-891) were logged; interestingly, nothing was positively logged from the South American mainland. Foreign DX, whether Latin American or Trans-Atlantic, was tougher here than from coastal sites. Some domestic channels had completely different occupants from those noted at home in Billerica. For instance, 1320 is locked up by CKEC - NS at night at home, but in S. Lee it was a "free for all" with CJMR - ON and WJAS - PA beating back CKEC most of the time. 950 at home has WROL (local at low power) battling WPEN - PA and sometimes CHER - NS and YVKG Venezuela. At S. Lee, WIBX and WBBF, both from upstate NY, shared dominance with WPEN a poor third -- and not a trace of WROL, CHER, or YVKG. Directional transmitting-antenna arrays can account for the often- considerable differences in dominant stations on regional channels over a fairly small distance between two receiving sites. Signal strengths in the groundwave bandscan are rated on a relative 1 - 10 scale: 1 = carrier in noise, 2 = weak with bits of audio, 3 = poor, 4 = poor to fair, 5 = fair, 6 = fair to good, 7 = good, 8 = very good, 9 = excellent, 10 = local (urban quality).
